Nigeria’s internet consumption surged to 973,455 terabytes in December 2024, reflecting a 36.5 per cent increase from the 713,200 terabytes recorded in December 2023.
This equates to approximately 998.79 million gigabytes of data usage over the period.
According to data released on Friday by the Nigerian Communications Commission, internet usage in the country also saw a month-on-month rise of 10.75 per cent between November and December 2024.
Internet subscriptions grew from 136.54 million in November to 139.28 million in December.
However, broadband penetration stood at 44.43 per cent by year-end, falling short of the 70 per cent target outlined in Nigeria’s National Broadband Plan (2020–2025), which is set to conclude this year.
Meanwhile, the total number of active telecommunications subscribers in Nigeria declined significantly, closing the year at 164.9 million, compared to 224.7 million in December 2023.
MTN Nigeria, the leading telecom provider, strengthened its market dominance, expanding its subscriber base from 81.2 million in November to 84.6 million in December, bringing its market share to 51 per cent.
Airtel Nigeria also saw an increase in its customer base, reaching 56.6 million from 55.4 million the previous month. Globacom, despite facing regulatory hurdles earlier in the year, gained 500,000 new subscribers, ending 2024 with 20.1 million users.
9mobile maintained a 1.99 per cent market share, closing the year with a subscriber count of 3.2 million.
