The Nigerian Medical Association in Ondo State has urged the state government to enhance the welfare of medical professionals to prevent a worsening exodus from the state’s healthcare sector.
The NMA made the call at launch of the 2024 Physicians Week, an event underscoring the critical issues facing healthcare workers in Nigeria.
Highlighting the need for a more appealing salary framework, the NMA urged the government to implement the Consolidated Medical Salary Structure across all levels of healthcare.
The Ondo NMA Chairman, Olumuyiwa Alonge, cited unfavorable working conditions as a major factor driving health workers out of the state, noting that improved welfare is essential to keeping skilled professionals in the healthcare system.
Alonge emphasized that consistent and equitable pay is vital for healthcare workers’ sense of value, which he described as essential for fostering commitment to patient care.
“We urge all levels of government to ensure the uniform implementation of our salary structure, the Consolidated Medical Salary Structure across all healthcare levels,” Alonge stated. “We also call for the prompt payment of all outstanding arrears related to salary upgrades, including the new minimum wage.”
Alonge expressed concern over the widespread issue of “brain drain” in Nigeria, noting that the healthcare sector in Ondo is equally affected.
“In recent years, we have observed an alarming trend, our most experienced and skilled healthcare professionals, the lifeblood of our healthcare system, are leaving Nigeria for opportunities abroad in drives, and our dear state is not spared,” he explained.
Alonge described the ongoing exodus as a reflection of systemic shortcomings, with inadequate compensation and career development opportunities failing to meet the needs of healthcare professionals.
According to Alonge, fair remuneration signifies more than just pay; it acknowledges the worth and hard work of medical practitioners.
“Fair remuneration is more than just a salary figure; it is a recognition of our value, a motivator for excellence, and a safeguard against burnout,” he said, stressing that healthcare work requires significant time and emotional investment. “When a healthcare worker is remunerated fairly and equitably, they feel valued and respected. This respect, in turn, fuels their dedication, strengthens their commitment to patient care, and fortifies the larger health ecosystem.”
Alonge also highlighted the challenges healthcare workers face due to inconsistent salary structures, both nationwide and within similar healthcare institutions.
