Yoruba Nation activist, Chief Sunday Adeyemo, widely known as Igboho, stated on Monday that he has not been formally notified of any legal suit concerning the unauthorized release of a recorded phone conversation.
Earlier, The PUNCH reported that Chief Gani Adams, the Aareonakakanfo (Traditional General) of Yorubaland, filed a lawsuit against Igboho in the Oyo State High Court in Ibadan.
The suit accuses Igboho of secretly recording and sharing a private conversation between Adams and another individual without permission.
As the National Coordinator of the Oodua Peoples Congress, Gani Adams argues that Igboho’s actions caused him significant harm in his capacity as the Aare Ona Kakanfo, demanding N5 billion in damages.
The court document, filed on October 15, 2024, in Osogbo, highlights Gani Adams’ plea for a declaration of his right to privacy regarding his home, personal correspondence, telephone conversations, and telegraphic communications.
In the motion, he requested the court declare that “it is unlawful, illegal, and unconstitutional for anyone to surreptitiously record the private telephone conversation between other persons without the consent and authority of the parties to the conversation.”
Adams further petitioned the court, stating, “A declaration that it is unlawful, illegal and unconstitutional for the respondent to covertly record and publicly release or publish the private telephone conversation between the applicant and another person, without the consent and authority of the Applicant.”
In response to the news about the lawsuit, Igboho, through a statement signed by his attorney, Mr. Junaid Sanusi, expressed his unawareness of any suit filed against him by Adams apart from a defamation case Igboho filed against Adams.
This defamation matter, according to Igboho’s legal team, is set for a hearing on October 29, 2024.
Mr. Sanusi clarified Igboho’s stance, stating, “Therefore, Chief Sunday Adeyemo Igboho will want to wait until he is served with any court process, if any, before reaction will be made.”
The statement emphasized Igboho’s intent to handle any legal matters formally, stating, “Mind you, such reaction will be made only by filing appropriate court papers in reaction to any process that might have been filed by Mr. Gani Adams and not necessarily by joining issue with Mr. Gani Adams on the news media as you know it is not in the character of Chief Sunday Adeyemo Igboho to trade words in the media.”
Igboho’s camp indicates he will refrain from discussing the matter publicly until formally served, choosing instead to address any allegations through appropriate legal channels.
