The Federal Capital Territory Police Command on Monday announced the arrest of a lawmaker, Hon. Alex Mascot Ikwechegh, in connection with an alleged assault on a driver in Abuja.
The Command’s spokesperson, Josephine Adeh, confirmed Ikwechegh’s detention and revealed that he is currently being questioned at the Maitama Police Station.
The police report mentioned that the incident came to light after Stephen Abuwatseya, a cab driver, filed a complaint with the FCT Police.
The initial findings suggest that Abuwatseya was tasked with delivering a package to Hon. Ikwechegh.
However, a disagreement reportedly ensued over how the package was delivered, leading to a confrontation that allegedly turned physical.
“Preliminary investigations indicate that Mr. Abuwatseya was delivering a package to Hon. Ikwegh when a dispute arose concerning the method of delivery. During this altercation, Mr. Abuwatseya was reportedly physically assaulted,” the statement read.
The police spokesperson emphasized that the FCT Police Command is particularly troubled by what they described as Ikwechegh’s dismissive response to the incident.
“The FCT Police Command expresses grave concern over Hon. Ikwegh’s dismissive attitude toward the office of the Inspector General of Police following the incident. After allegedly slapping the victim, he reportedly remarked with contempt, ‘You can go ahead and call the Inspector General of Police,’ demonstrating a troubling disregard for the authority of law enforcement,” Adeh noted.
The Command’s Commissioner, Olatunji Disu, has directed a comprehensive investigation into the matter to ensure impartiality.
“The Command is committed to conducting an impartial investigation and ensuring justice in all cases. Upon completion of the investigation, appropriate legal action will be taken,” the police statement added.
This incident has drawn attention to the FCT Police’s commitment to upholding justice, especially in cases involving public officials, emphasizing that the law applies equally to everyone.
