Popular Nigerian singer, Simisola Bolatito Kosoko, known widely by her stage name Simi, has delivered a compelling message to parents, urging them to teach their daughters the importance of financial independence.
In a recent social media video, Simi emphasized the need for girls to be self-sufficient rather than relying on men for their livelihood.
In her advice, Simi stated, “Please do not raise your daughters to think that when they grow up, all they have to do is to rely on someone.”
She underscored the importance of women having their own economic power, stressing, “A woman’s economic power is about protecting herself, fending for herself, and being able to confidently acknowledge that she’s a complete person.”
Reflecting on her own upbringing, the artist noted that she had the advantage of being surrounded by people who believed in her potential and encouraged her.
“I grew up among people that believed in me, that pushed me, that encouraged me,” Simi shared. Recognizing that not all women have the same privilege, she urged others to extend opportunities where possible, saying, “When you’re in a position to give a deserving woman an opportunity, please give it to her.”
Simi also addressed women directly, urging them to chase their personal dreams. “Please make your dreams about you and not about proving that you don’t need people,” she advised, acknowledging that while external support is sometimes necessary, the most important relationship women can have is with themselves. “You’re not going to need anyone as much as you need yourself,” she added.
Her message sparked a variety of reactions from Nigerians on social media. Many praised her stance, with @intimatesbykoko noting, “Greatness isn’t gender based. It’s safe for everyone to depend solely on themselves.”
Another user, @bezo.honeybadger, added, “Nigerian woman really needs to hear this.”
However, the message also drew some mixed responses. User @ashad0206 quipped, “They mother are offline,” while @karenblqk commented, “Women make your own money, but try as much as possible to be feminine!”
Some commenters pushed back against Simi’s perspective, with @wini_poochie asserting, “All these feminists keep wondering why men always break up with them,” reflecting the ongoing debate about gender roles and independence in Nigerian society.
Simi’s empowering message has clearly resonated with many, but it also highlights the diverse opinions surrounding women’s independence and societal expectations.
