No fewer than 13 people lost their lives in separate cult-related attacks in Nibo and Nodu-Okpuno, both located in Awka South Local Government Area of Anambra State, on Sunday.
According to The PUNCH, the violence reportedly erupted during the Nibo Onwa Asaa festival when rival cult groups invaded the venue and began firing indiscriminately, according to community sources.
Eyewitnesses described scenes of chaos as gunshots rang out, sending attendees into panic.
One resident, who requested anonymity, explained the gravity of the situation. “Nibo is in turmoil. Around 10 people were shot dead near a restaurant, and more were found at Eke Nibo.
Bodies were scattered across the roads. It was a terrifying scene as gunmen fired into the air, causing widespread fear.”
In addition to the fatalities at the festival, three more people were killed in a separate attack in Nodu Village, also in Awka South. Eyewitness accounts suggest that suspected cultists were responsible for the shooting.
The Anambra State Police Command confirmed the incidents, with the spokesperson, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, appealing to the public for information. “The command is aware of a suspected cult-related clash in Nibo, Awka South LGA.
The Commissioner of Police, CP Nnaghe Obono Itam, has ordered the immediate deployment of additional operatives to the area,” Ikenga stated.
He also urged witnesses to come forward with any information that could lead to the arrest of those responsible, assuring the public that their reports would be handled confidentially.
“You can contact the Command Control Room or the Police Public Relations Officer with any details. The safety of our communities is a priority, and further developments will be communicated,” Ikenga added.
