The Governor of Jigawa State, Malam Umar Namadi, has confirmed that the death toll from the recent petrol tanker explosion in the state has climbed to 171.
The governor shared this update while addressing members of the House of Representatives who were visiting the scene of the tragedy.
According to Tribune, Governor Namadi expressed deep sorrow over the incident, describing it as a “serious tragedy” and emphasized that the state government is fully responsible for the medical treatment of the injured.
“This is a tragedy from God Almighty, and we are praying for His mercy,” he stated, offering prayers for the victims and their families.
Hon. Adamu Yakubu, representing Birninkudu/Buji Federal Constituency, also expressed his shock at the high number of casualties.
“It is really shocking because there is no accident anywhere that has claimed over 100 lives at once,” Yakubu remarked, adding that even during the Boko Haram insurgency, such a large loss of life had not been recorded in a single incident.
Yakubu commended Governor Namadi and his administration for their prompt response in providing assistance to the victims and their families. “This shows real concern and commitment by the governor to his people,” he said.
The lawmaker further conveyed his condolences to the families of the deceased, injured victims, and the entire state over the tragic loss, calling it a devastating moment for Jigawa State.
