The death toll from the fuel tanker explosion that occurred on Tuesday in Majiya town, Taura Local Government Area of Jigawa State, has risen to 167, according to Jigawa State Governor, Umar Namadi.
According to The PUNCH, governor Namadi disclosed this update during a condolence visit from Kano State Governor, Abba Yusuf, at the Government House in Dutse on Thursday evening.
The tragedy has also left 67 people injured, many of whom are receiving treatment at various medical facilities within and outside the state.
“As of Thursday evening, 167 lives had been lost in the fire disaster,” Governor Namadi said, emphasizing the gravity of the situation.
The governor expressed his deep appreciation for the support received from Kano State, particularly the N100 million donation, which he assured would be used to support the victims and their families.
“We are grateful to Kano State for their generosity during this difficult time. This donation will go a long way in helping those affected by the disaster,” he said.
A mass burial has already been held for 147 of the victims, who lost their lives while attempting to scoop fuel from the tanker wreckage.
Meanwhile, the Nigerian Safety Investigation Bureau announced on Thursday that an investigation into the explosion has begun.
In a statement, the agency said, “The team will assess the circumstances surrounding the crash and explosion to identify causal factors and provide safety recommendations aimed at preventing future occurrences.”
The NSIB also extended its condolences to the families affected by the tragic incident, pledging to uncover the cause of the explosion and prevent a repeat of such disasters.
Earlier reports from PUNCH had confirmed that the death toll stood at 147 as of Wednesday, before the latest figures were announced.
The Chairman of Taura LGA, Shu’aibu Hambali, confirmed the rising casualty numbers in an interview with Arewa Radio.
The incident has drawn widespread sympathy and condolences from across the country and beyond, as families continue to mourn their loved ones.
