At least 90 people have lost their lives, and 50 others have been hospitalized following a tragic petrol tanker explosion in Majiya Town, located in the Taura Local Government Area of Jigawa State.
According to the News Agency of Nigeria, the incident occurred late on Tuesday night when the tanker, reportedly en route from Kano to Nguru in Yobe State, lost control and exploded near Khadija University.
Confirming the tragedy, Jigawa Police spokesperson Shi’isu Adam said, “The tanker driver lost control at about 11:30 p.m., leading to the explosion. Sadly, people gathered around the scene despite warnings to avoid such incidents.”
He added that the mass casualties could have been avoided had people heeded previous warnings to stay away from accident sites involving fuel tankers.
“The unfortunate reality is that, despite continuous cautioning, people still gather at scenes like this, which is why we have such a high number of casualties,” Adam stated.
The victims are set to be buried in a mass ceremony on Wednesday, while the injured are receiving treatment at the Ringim General Hospital.
