Lagos State Emergency Management Agency has reported that no casualties were recorded as two-storey building on Amusu Street, Orile Iganmu, collapsed early Monday morning.
The incident caused nearby residents to flee for their safety.
Footage circulating online shows the structure giving way, as onlookers scattered in fear.
The LASEMA’s Head of Public Affairs Mr. Nosa Okunbor, confirmed the inciden, noting that thhankfully, no casualties were reported.
In his official statement, Okunbor explained that the building collapsed on its own around 8:45 a.m.
He added, “LASEMA Response Teams in Search and Rescue Operation is at a self-collapsed building on Amusu Street, Baale Bus Stop, Orile Iganmu. No casualties and updates to follow.” This confirms that the agency acted swiftly, ensuring the safety of residents.
A LASEMA official, speaking anonymously to PUNCH Online, further corroborated that no one was harmed as the building had been evacuated prior to the collapse.
“I can confirm to you that the incident happened this morning but there were no casualties. An evacuation already took place before the collapse,” the official noted, providing crucial context to the preventive measures in place.
Emergency responders arrived at the scene shortly after, initiating further safety procedures.
This incident adds to a series of structural failures across Lagos, with a similar case in May when a four-story building near the Oba of Lagos’ palace at Iga Iduganran, Lagos Island, collapsed, trapping several people.
Another close call occurred in July when a family narrowly escaped disaster at Iyana Ipaja, Lagos. The boys’ quarters behind a one-storey building on No. 49 Oyinlola Street, Off Adealu Bus Stop, caved in, leaving the residents shaken but uninjured.
This recent event highlights the urgent need for better oversight of building structures in Lagos, as collapses become more frequent across the city.
