Super Eagles head coach, Augustine Eguavoen, has expressed confidence that forward Victor Boniface will soon break his goal-scoring drought for the national team, potentially in their upcoming Africa Cup of Nations qualifier against Libya.
Boniface, who has been in scintillating form since his move to Bayer Leverkusen last summer, has firmly established himself among the elite strikers in Europe.
His performances for the Bundesliga side, which include a remarkable goal tally, have earned him widespread acclaim.
However, the 23-year-old striker has found it difficult to replicate this success at the international level, going scoreless in eight appearances for the Nigerian national team.
Despite this dry spell, Eguavoen remains optimistic about Boniface’s ability to deliver for the Super Eagles.
With star striker Victor Osimhen—recently crowned African Player of the Year—out of action due to injury, the responsibility to lead the attack now falls on Boniface’s shoulders.
The Leverkusen forward will be expected to step up as Nigeria seeks to maintain their unbeaten run in the 2025 AFCON qualifiers.
“Victor Boniface has always been a part of this team and will continue to be a part of this team. Yes, he is not finding the back of the net, and I can assure you that if he starts tomorrow, he will score,” Eguavoen stated confidently during a press conference in Uyo.
Boniface’s task will be a significant one as the Super Eagles face a Libya side desperate for points at the Godswill Akpabio Stadium.
Nigeria’s qualification campaign has been strong so far, having secured an impressive victory over the Benin Republic followed by a hard-fought draw against Rwanda
In contrast, Libya has struggled to gain momentum in the qualifiers, making this fixture crucial for both sides.
With Osimhen sidelined, Boniface’s club form and sharp instincts in front of goal will be vital as Nigeria look to secure their place in the 2025 AFCON tournament and continue their impressive run under Eguavoen’s leadership.
All eyes will be on Boniface to see if he can finally translate his club success into goals for the national team.
