Former Sheffield United defender, George Baldock, has tragically passed away at the age of 31, as confirmed by Super League Greece.
Baldock, who had signed with Greek club Panathinaikos during the summer transfer window, was found dead at his home in the Athens suburb of Glyfada, according to Greek media reports.
The Greece international, known for his versatility as a full-back, had recently made his debut for Panathinaikos in August.
Despite not being named in the Greece squad for their upcoming match against England, Baldock had played in Panathinaikos’ 0-0 draw against Olympiacos on Sunday.
Super League Greece expressed its sorrow in an official statement, saying, “The entire Super League football family expresses its deep sorrow for the untimely loss of Panathinaikos and our national team footballer, George Baldock, and extends its deepest condolences to his family and loved ones.”
Tributes poured in from former teammates and clubs. England international and ex-Sheffield United player Harry Maguire shared his condolences on Instagram, posting “RIP” along with a heartbreak emoji and an image of Baldock.
Northampton Town, where Baldock had a brief loan spell in 2011, also paid tribute on social media platform X, stating, “We are deeply saddened to learn of the passing of former loanee George Baldock at the tragically young age of 31. George made five appearances in 2011 before playing for Oxford United and Sheffield United. Sending our sincerest condolences to George’s family and friends.”
Born in England, Baldock began his professional journey with MK Dons, where he spent eight years developing his game.
Throughout his career, he experienced multiple loan spells, playing for clubs like Tamworth, Oxford United, and Northampton Town, before securing a permanent move to Sheffield United in 2017.
At Sheffield United, Baldock became a fan favourite, making over 200 appearances, including 83 in the Premier League, where he contributed two goals and six assists.
After a successful seven-year tenure at Bramall Lane, Baldock moved to Panathinaikos, looking for a new chapter in his career.
He was also capped 12 times by the Greece national team, representing the country in international competitions.
This season, Baldock made four appearances for Panathinaikos across all competitions, marking a promising start to his time in Greece before his untimely passing.
His death has sent shockwaves through the football community, with condolences pouring in from former clubs, teammates, and fans across Europe.
