The Rivers State Police Command has initiated a comprehensive investigation into the post-election violence that erupted in several local government areas, resulting in loss of life and the destruction of three local council secretariats.
According to The PUNCH, this was confirmed by the state’s Commissioner of Police, Mustapha Mohammed, during an on-the-spot assessment of the affected areas on Wednesday.
The violence broke out on Monday after the Inspector General of Police ordered the unsealing of secretariats in all 23 local government areas of the state.
In response to the unrest, the police have intensified efforts to restore peace and ensure public safety.
“We are out this morning on a confidence-building patrol to assure the public of their safety,” said Mohammed. “This is part of the proactive measures we are implementing to ensure security in Rivers State.”
He further announced the formation of a special investigation team to handle the case.
“We have embarked on a full-scale investigation, and a high-powered team, led by the Deputy Commissioner of Police, State Criminal Investigation Department, has been assigned to investigate thoroughly,” Mohammed explained. “The findings will be submitted to the Inspector General of Police upon completion.”
In addition to the investigation, the Commissioner assured residents that security has been bolstered with increased patrols across the state.
He urged stakeholders to maintain peace and called on the public to cooperate with law enforcement to help restore order.
“Peace is essential for everyone. We encourage the public to collaborate with the police in our efforts to ensure peace returns to Rivers State,” Mohammed appealed.
