The Kano State Private Health Institution Management Agency has shut down four patent medicine outlets in Rogo Local Government Area for engaging in unlawful practices and failing to meet the regulatory requirements.
According to The PUNCH, the facilities were reportedly carrying out health services, including blood transfusions and drips, without proper authorization.
Leading the inspection on Friday, PHIMA’s Director General, Prof. Salisu Tofa, emphasized that the agency’s goal is to cleanse the health sector across Kano State.
Represented by Abdussalam Zarewa, a director at PHIMA, Prof. Tofa disclosed that the four facilities were not registered with the agency and lacked its official approval, a clear violation of regulatory laws.
Tofa explained, “The facilities are operating illegally which is against the laws of the agency hence our decision to close them to serve as a deterrent to others.”
The shutdown is part of a broader effort to enforce compliance with the provisions laid out by the Pharmaceutical Council of Nigeria.
The inspection revealed that the closed facilities were offering medical procedures such as blood transfusions and lab tests without a functioning laboratory.
The facilities involved include Sayane Nagari in Damagari, Zoza Ward; Muktar Danjume of Taimakon Alumma in Kwanar Jajaye Ward; Jonathan Magaji’s Rahab Philip Chemist in Barbaji Jajaye Ward; and Blessing Yanoko Chemist, based in Yanoko Fulatan Ward.
The proprietors of the clinics were informed that they could register with PHIMA and pay a mandatory fee of N50,000 to bring their operations into legal compliance.
Additionally, Maigayya Clinic and Maternity in Yanoko Fulatan Ward was warned to address the agency’s concerns or face permanent closure.
In response to the crackdown, the owners of the affected facilities admitted their breaches and assured PHIMA that they would visit the agency’s office to complete the required procedures for legal operation.
