The Cross River State Electrification Agency has launched a major rehabilitation and electrification project in Bekwarra Local Government Area, as part of efforts to address longstanding electricity issues in the region.
This initiative follows a directive from the state governor, Prince Bassey Otu, who has made it a priority to ensure that Bekwarra residents have access to reliable power supply.
Acting on the governor’s orders, SEA’s Director-General, Mr. Francis Ekpo, promptly dispatched a team of engineers to begin work on the electrification project.
The project is a key part of Governor Otu’s larger effort to fulfill his administration’s commitments under the ‘People’s First Agenda’, which prioritizes improving living conditions across Cross River State.
In addressing the power challenges facing Bekwarra, the governor emphasized the need for a complete overhaul of the local electricity infrastructure, with a particular focus on restoring and upgrading power lines that have deteriorated over time.
His directive to SEA reflects a broader vision of sustainable development for rural communities in the state.
Ekpo, while mobilizing engineers to the site, called on the various communities in Bekwarra to actively collaborate with SEA in achieving the governor’s vision.
He stressed the importance of community engagement in ensuring the success of the project.
“The chiefs, elders, youths, and all community members must take responsibility for protecting the equipment and installations once they are in place to prevent vandalism,” he said.
This project not only highlights Governor Otu’s dedication to addressing the electricity deficit in Bekwarra but also signals his administration’s broader push to improve essential services across the state.
The involvement of local stakeholders will be key to the success and sustainability of the project, ensuring that the benefits of electrification reach every household in the area.
