Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State has restated his administration’s dedication to prioritizing the security and welfare of the state’s residents.
Speaking during a state broadcast on Tuesday, October 1, 2024, in celebration of Nigeria’s 64th Independence Anniversary, the governor emphasized the importance of strengthening democratic institutions and fostering national unity.
In his address, Governor Makinde reflected on the country’s journey since independence, acknowledging both the achievements and challenges.
“Today, we celebrate 64 years of Nigeria’s independence—a journey marked by moments of pride and reflection. We have walked, crawled, run, stumbled, and risen again, demonstrating an unwavering resilience that defines us as a nation,” he said.
Makinde also highlighted the development strides made in Oyo State, attributing the progress to the cooperation and support of the people over the past five years.
“Here in Oyo State, we have shown the same resilience, transitioning from accelerated development to sustainable growth, with a focus on lifting our people from poverty to prosperity,” he noted.
Amidst the economic challenges faced by the nation, the governor encouraged residents to remain hopeful.
“They say the darkest hour comes just before dawn. As we navigate these difficult economic times, we must remember our resilient spirit. Rest assured, the sun will rise,” Makinde stated.
During the broadcast, the governor announced new initiatives aimed at economic recovery, particularly for small-scale businesses and local entrepreneurs.
He revealed an expansion of the guarantor base for small-scale loans provided to agricultural entrepreneurs under the Agricultural Credit Corporation of Oyo State.
“Guarantors will no longer be limited to civil servants but will now include community development associations, farmers’ associations, and artisans’ associations,” he disclosed.
Furthermore, Makinde extended the state’s transportation subsidy under the Sustainable Action for Economic Recovery Scheme for an additional six months, now including support for trucks to facilitate the evacuation of agricultural produce.
“The subsidy will now cover trucks to aid produce evacuation, implemented through various trader and agriculture units,” he added.
On security, the governor reassured residents of the government’s continued focus on their safety, especially during the Independence Day celebrations.
“During your celebrations, you may notice an increased security presence. Do not be alarmed—they are there to ensure your safety and guarantee a peaceful celebration,” Makinde assured.
He concluded by calling for unity and urging the people of Oyo State to focus on what binds them together.
“Now is not the time to focus on what divides us. We must hold fast to the things that unite us—our shared identity, culture, and history. Let us remember who the real enemies are so we do not turn against our friends,” the governor advised.
