As Nigeria marks its 64th Independence anniversary, the Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, has directed the deployment of robust security measures across the country to ensure the safety of citizens during the celebrations.
The IGP’s orders include a heavy police presence at event venues and on major highways, coordinated in collaboration with other security agencies.
In a statement released on Monday, the IGP assured Nigerians that the police force is committed to safeguarding lives and property, urging citizens to celebrate with a renewed sense of unity and national pride.
“Our priority is to create a secure and conducive environment for everyone to celebrate this significant occasion. I have ordered the deployment of sufficient personnel and tactical resources to ensure maximum security,” said IGP Egbetokun.
He added that the police force will take proactive measures to address any threats, warning that miscreants looking to disrupt the festivities would be swiftly dealt with.
“We will not tolerate any activities that pose a threat to the peace and security of the country during these celebrations,” he emphasized.
The IGP also urged officers deployed for duty during the celebrations to be both firm and courteous in their interactions with the public, while reiterating the importance of professionalism in maintaining order.
In his Independence Day message, IGP Egbetokun called on Nigerians to reflect on the nation’s progress and the sacrifices made by past generations.
“As we commemorate our journey to self-governance, it is crucial to honor the contributions of our founding fathers and all those who have worked for the unity and growth of Nigeria,” he said.
He further called on all citizens to promote peace and uphold the rule of law, reminding them of their shared responsibility in building a brighter future.
