The Coalition of Concerned Citizens of Kaduna State has spoken out against the planned October 1 protests, calling for peaceful dialogue and constructive engagement instead of public demonstrations.
According to The PUNCH, the group’s spokesperson, Yusuf Lawal, emphasized the importance of maintaining peace and order during the nation’s Independence Day celebrations.
“We strongly oppose any orchestrated protests that could result in violence and chaos,” Lawal said. “October 1 should be a day to celebrate our national heroes, not a day for destruction and civil unrest.”
Lawal acknowledged the efforts of the state government to improve living conditions for its citizens, particularly highlighting the planned establishment of skill acquisition centers slated to begin operations in December.
“We appreciate the government’s initiatives and encourage transparency and fairness in the selection process for these programs,” he noted, adding that protests often have negative socio-economic consequences, including economic disruption and potential loss of life.
Instead of resorting to protests, the coalition urged the public to engage in more productive avenues such as participating in Local Government elections, which Lawal said would offer citizens a better platform to voice their grievances and influence positive change.
“Citizens should focus on ensuring accessibility, pushing for diverse programmes, and advocating for the recruitment of qualified instructors alongside necessary support services,” he added.
Meanwhile, reports indicate that the Nigeria Police Force has deployed officers to key locations across Kaduna in preparation for the protests, as organizers insist they will proceed with demonstrations on October 1.
If carried out, this would mark the second protest in two months, with many Nigerians expressing frustration over rising petrol prices, electricity tariffs, and the floating of the naira under President Bola Tinubu’s administration.
