The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission is poised to bring former Kogi governor, Alhaji Yahaya Bello, to court regarding the fraud allegations amounting to N8.2 billion against him.
EFCC spokesperson Dele Oyewale made this announcement in a statement released on Wednesday in Abuja, emphasizing that Bello will be afforded the opportunity to defend himself in court.
Oyewale pointed out that Bello, like other indicted former ministers, ex-governors, high-ranking officials, and various individuals entangled in internet fraud cases, will not receive any special treatment.
He asserted that any attempts to obstruct the ongoing investigation and prosecution will be met with resolute resistance from the agency.
“We are prepared to present all necessary evidence to substantiate our claims in court,” Oyewale stated, reinforcing the EFCC’s dedication to ensuring that justice prevails in the money laundering charges already filed against Bello.
“EFCC is eager to engage the former governor in the courtroom, where the avalanche of evidence so painstakingly assembled can be presented,” he added, highlighting the agency’s commitment to a thorough and transparent legal process.
Bello’s day in court is inevitable, according to Oyewale, regardless of any strategies aimed at undermining the investigation, including blackmail, appeals to public sympathy, or acts of defiance.
“The EFCC will continue with its no sacred cow policy, no matter whose ox is gored,” he asserted, acknowledging the common reality that corruption often retaliates.
“Bello must have his day in court, no matter the recourse to blackmail, appeal to emotive public sympathy or acts of brigandage,” he concluded, reiterating the commission’s firm stance on accountability.
