A 22-year-old student at Lagos State University,Yetunde Solabomi is in desperate need of ₦15 million to continue her battle against an aggressive form of breast cancer.
According to The PUNCH, Yetunde, who is studying Fisheries and Aquatic Biology, was diagnosed with grade 3 HER2-positive invasive ductal carcinoma in March 2024, after discovering a lump in her right breast a month earlier.
“I found a lump in February, and by March, the doctors confirmed it was breast cancer,” Yetunde shared in a recent interview.
The diagnosis has placed a heavy financial strain on her family, as her treatment plan includes costly Herceptin injections, chemotherapy, and surgery.
Each Herceptin cycle costs ₦639,000, and she requires a total of 14 cycles to complete her treatment, bringing the total estimated cost to over ₦14 million.
A clinical oncologist at Lagos State University Teaching Hospital, who is managing Yetunde’s case, emphasized the need for immediate financial assistance.
“She needs funds urgently. I’ve helped where I can, securing payment for four cycles of chemotherapy before we moved to the more expensive targeted therapy,” the doctor said.
Thus far, Yetunde has undergone two cycles of targeted therapy and still requires two more alongside chemotherapy before she can undergo a mastectomy.
After the surgery, Yetunde will need radiotherapy, which costs ₦1.375 million, along with ongoing medication priced at ₦1.5 million every three weeks for a total of 18 cycles.
“If we don’t continue treatment on time, the tumor might stop shrinking,” the oncologist explained. “We’ve made progress, but it’s crucial we keep up the momentum. If the tumor continues to soften, we hope there won’t be cancer cells left on the chest wall during surgery.”
Despite the financial burden, Yetunde’s family remains hopeful. Her brother, Favour Solabomi, revealed that they had managed to raise ₦4 million through the support of a Catholic church and contributions from friends and family. However, those funds have now been exhausted.
“We received ₦2 million from a Catholic church, and with the help of family and friends, we raised over ₦4 million, but we’ve run out of funds,” Favour said. “We are now appealing to the public for help.”
Efforts to raise additional money have included circulating graphics for donations, but the family is still far from meeting the required amount. Despite the challenges, Yetunde remains resilient.
“I try to stay strong, especially for my mother, even though chemotherapy leaves me weak for days,” Yetunde said.
Her family is reaching out to the public for assistance. “Any amount would go a long way in helping my sister,” Favour added.
