Former Kogi State Governor, Yahaya Bello, voluntarily surrendered to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission on Wednesday, September 18, following an investigation into allegations of corruption and fraudulent enrichment during his tenure.
The EFCC had previously declared Bello wanted over claims of financial misconduct involving money laundering charges amounting to N80 billion.
Despite numerous invitations for questioning and an ongoing court case, the former governor had repeatedly failed to attend hearings and evaded appearances before the commission.
In a statement issued by Ohiare Michael, Director of the Yahaya Bello Media Office, the decision for Bello to turn himself in was reached after extensive consultations with his family, legal representatives, and political associates.
The statement emphasized Bello’s commitment to the rule of law, clarifying that he had sought to uphold his fundamental rights throughout the legal proceedings.
“The former Governor, who has great respect for the rule of law and constituted authority, had, all the while, only sought the enforcement of his fundamental rights in order to ensure due process,” the statement read.
“The case has been before a competent court of jurisdiction, and Alhaji Yahaya Bello had been duly represented by his legal team at every hearing. It is important for the former Governor to now honour the invitation of the EFCC to clear his name as he has nothing to hide and nothing to fear,” it added.
Bello’s camp underscored his belief in the anti-corruption efforts championed by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration, reaffirming his support for Nigeria’s development through transparent governance.
The statement further highlighted that during his administration, Bello implemented measures aimed at combating corruption within Kogi State’s government.
“It is on record that he was the first Governor of Kogi State to put in place an anti-corruption mechanism to check graft and ensure that the resources of the State work for the people of the State,” the statement continued.
Accompanied by several prominent figures, the former governor arrived at the EFCC headquarters to cooperate with the commission. His team expressed hope that the EFCC would handle the situation professionally while respecting Bello’s fundamental rights as a citizen of Nigeria.
Details of the former governor’s interaction with the EFCC operatives are expected to be disclosed in due course.
