Four individuals sustained injuries on Monday following the collapse of a residential building in the Riyom Local Government Area of Plateau State.
According to The PUNCH, the collapse occurred after prolonged rainfall that began Sunday evening and continued into the early hours of Monday.
The affected building, located near Government College, Riyom, crumbled while residents were asleep.
Dusu Judith, a local resident, confirmed the incident, stating, “The house collapsed early Monday while the occupants were still in bed. Thankfully, no lives were lost, but four individuals, mostly children, were injured and are receiving treatment at a hospital.”
Another witness, Bot Rwang, expressed disbelief at the event, saying, “It’s truly a miracle they survived. The building was completely reduced to rubble, yet the family members escaped without any fatalities.”
This incident adds to a string of recent building collapses in Plateau State, which experts attribute to poor construction practices, substandard materials, and negligence.
Just last July, 22 schoolchildren lost their lives and over 130 others were injured when a school building collapsed in the Jos North Local Government Area.
In response to that tragedy, the state government had shut down the affected school and demolished other unsafe structures, urging residents to adhere to safety standards and secure proper approvals before constructing buildings.
