Barcelona’s Sporting Director Deco has confirmed that the club intends to retain midfielder Frenkie de Jong, quashing recent speculation about his potential departure.
Rumours had surfaced suggesting that De Jong might reconsider his future at the club at the end of the current season due to ongoing tensions with Barcelona’s hierarchy.
These tensions have reportedly intensified because of his refusal to undergo surgery for a foot injury that has sidelined him since April.
Manchester United, long-time admirers of the Dutch midfielder, were once again linked with a potential move. However, Deco made it clear that Barcelona has no interest in parting ways with De Jong.
“I don’t understand all the talk about Frenkie,” Deco remarked, emphasizing the club’s position. “He has a contract with Barca and we are very happy with him. He is a player we are anxious to see come back because we need Frenkie.”
Deco further stressed that the club highly values De Jong and is eager for his return to the pitch, stating, “We want him to stay, but the player will decide at the right time. It is not a matter for now. What matters is that Frenkie plays with us again because we need him and we value him very much.”
Adding to the ongoing drama, former Barcelona presidential candidate Victor Font recently claimed to have spoken directly with De Jong.
According to Font, the player’s reluctance to proceed with surgery stems from Barcelona’s inability to guarantee the operation’s success.
Reports also suggest that Barcelona has warned De Jong about the need to declare himself fit soon if he continues to reject the surgical option.
Despite the club’s pressure, De Jong is expected to prioritize his full recovery and return only when he feels completely fit.
