The Delta State Government has directed all public and private primary and secondary schools to resume on Monday, September 9, 2024, for the start of the 2024/2025 first term, except for those located in Oshimili South Local Government Area.
According to The PUNCH, schools in this area, including Asaba, will now resume on Monday, September 23, 2024, due to preparations for the upcoming 8th edition of the National Youth Games.
This was disclosed in a statement issued on Sunday by Augustine Oghoro, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Basic and Secondary Education, on behalf of the State Commissioner for Primary Education, Kingsley Ashibogwu, and the Commissioner for Secondary Education, Rose Ezewu.
The statement highlighted that boarding students are expected to return to school on Sunday, September 8.
Explaining the reason for the delayed resumption in Oshimili South, the statement noted, “Some schools in Asaba, including West End Mixed Secondary School, Government Model Secondary School, Junior Staff Primary School, Unity Secondary School, and Osadenis Secondary School, have been designated as hostels and venues for the National Youth Games, which will take place from September 9 to September 19, 2024.”
The government emphasized that all other schools across the state would reopen as scheduled, with learners expected to clean classrooms and school premises on the first day under the supervision of their teachers.
“Classes will commence immediately after the cleaning exercise in schools across the state, except in Asaba, where activities will begin on September 23,” the statement added.
The ministry also urged school principals and teachers to comply with the directives, assuring that the Commissioners and ministry staff would monitor compliance.
“The Ministry of Basic and Secondary Education will not tolerate any form of non-compliance from teachers,” the statement warned.
Parents and guardians were advised to prepare their children for the new term, as a resumption test is scheduled for Thursday, September 12, 2024.
“This test will form part of the learners’ assessment for the new term,” the statement said.
The statement concluded by stressing the importance of the resumption schedule and the ministry’s commitment to ensuring a smooth start to the academic year.
