Italy have released defender Riccardo Calafiori back to Arsenal following a leg injury sustained during their 3-1 victory over France on Friday night.
The young defender, who had impressed in the starting lineup for the Azzurri, was forced to exit the game in the second half after an unusual collision.
The incident occurred when French winger Ousmane Dembele, under a challenge from Italy’s Alessandro Bastoni, fell awkwardly and his studs raked the back of Calafiori’s leg.
Despite needing medical attention, Calafiori initially carried on playing before the decision was made to substitute him.
Italy’s head coach, Luciano Spalletti, remained hopeful after the match, stating that he believed the issue was minor and that Calafiori might still be available for Italy’s upcoming game against Israel.
However, after the weekend, it became clear that the injury required more caution.
“Calafiori was not fit enough to train with his Italy teammates this weekend,” a source confirmed, leading to his return to Arsenal’s training base.
While the decision to send Calafiori back is said to be precautionary, Arsenal will be keeping a close eye on his recovery, especially with a hectic fixture list fast approaching.
The Gunners face Tottenham Hotspur next Sunday in a highly anticipated north London derby, followed by a UEFA Champions League trip to Atalanta, and then a crucial clash with title contenders Manchester City.
Since joining Arsenal from Bologna over the summer, Calafiori has made two substitute appearances for Mikel Arteta’s side.
He featured in their 2-0 win against Aston Villa and also played the final 30 minutes of their contentious 1-1 draw with Brighton & Hove Albion.
However, the talented defender is still awaiting his first start for the Gunners.
Arsenal will be hopeful that his injury is not severe and that he will be available for selection during this critical stretch of the season.
