Bolton Wanderers striker Victor Adeboyejo has been sidelined after an unusual injury triggered by a “pretty hefty sneeze,” according to head coach Ian Evatt.
The Nigerian forward, who plays in League One, sustained the back injury on Monday, causing him to miss Tuesday’s fixture against Barrow.
His return remains uncertain as he deals with ongoing discomfort in his back and ribcage.
Evatt, already grappling with a depleted squad due to injuries and the international break, explained that Adeboyejo’s pain stemmed from an unexpected source.
“Victor has been suffering with a nasty back injury and a sneeze set it off, believe it or not,” he told The Bolton News.
The 26-year-old striker underwent a scan after feeling a “crack” between his ribs. “We are hopeful it is just a cartilage or muscular issue, but until we have a good look at the scan we won’t know,” added Evatt.
The coach also noted that the injury first occurred during a challenge in a previous game against Charlton, but the powerful sneeze exacerbated the issue.
“He was okay at the time, but then he had a pretty hefty sneeze. Victor is a powerful boy, and even his sneezes are powerful” the coach noted.
Evatt, reflecting on the unusual circumstances, said, “I’ll have to start having a long look at myself when players start getting injured sneezing.”
Despite Adeboyejo’s absence, Bolton managed to secure a 3-2 victory over Barrow. They currently sit 18th in League One with four points from their first four matches.
