The Nigeria Correctional Service announced on Thursday that the federal government has approved a 50% increase in the feeding allowance for inmates, effective from August 2024.
The move aims to address the rising cost of food and enhance the welfare of inmates.
NCS spokesperson, Abubakar Umar, confirmed the adjustment during an interview with Punch, stating, “The increase in the inmate feeding allowance is part of our effort to improve the living conditions of inmates amidst rising food costs. This 50% hike is just the beginning.”
Umar elaborated that this increase marks the first phase of planned adjustments. “The FG will also consider additional reviews. Normally, there is a period when inmate feeding allowances are reviewed.
Following a presentation during the budget process, the FG deemed it necessary to adjust the allowance due to the rising cost of food. Further adjustments are expected,” Umar added.
In related developments, Umar also revealed that there are currently 3,590 inmates on death row across Nigeria’s correctional facilities.
The overall inmate population stands at 84,741, comprising 82,821 males and 1,920 females as of September 3, 2024. Of this number, 57,750 are Awaiting Trial Inmates (ATIs), including 56,303 males and 1,447 females.
Umar highlighted the challenge posed by the high number of Awaiting Trial Persons (ATPs), stating, “The substantial number of ATPs presents a considerable challenge for the service. We are implementing measures to address this issue and facilitate timely judicial processing.”
