The Federal Road Safety Corps has unveiled a new mobile app and the National Crash Reporting Information System to improve road safety and reduce traffic accidents across Nigeria.
According to The PUNCH, the launch took place on Thursday in Abuja, with the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Senator George Akume, describing the initiative as a significant leap in the FRSC’s digital transformation efforts.
Akume commended the FRSC for embracing technology to manage road safety more effectively. He emphasized that the new tools will raise public awareness of road safety and help address the causes of accidents.
“Data shows that between January and December 2023, road crashes claimed the lives of 5,081 Nigerians, while 31,874 were injured. In just the first half of 2024, 2,776 people have died, and 16,309 have been injured in road crashes. These numbers are alarming and call for urgent action from all stakeholders to reduce them,” Akume stated.
He added that the introduction of the mobile app and NACRIS is expected to boost the commitment of both road users and traffic law enforcement officers toward promoting safer roads.
“I commend the FRSC’s leadership for aligning with President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope agenda, which focuses on digital transformation and economic growth. The Federal Government remains committed to supporting these initiatives for the benefit of all Nigerians,” he noted.
FRSC Corps Marshal, Shehu Mohammed, highlighted that despite the agency’s progress, there is still room for improvement, especially in adapting to global trends in the digital age.
He said the new mobile app and NACRIS are integral to the FRSC’s digital transformation strategy, which aligns with the president’s vision.
“Even with our modest achievements, we recognize the need for continuous development. The launch of the FRSC Mobile App and NACRIS is a deliberate effort to adapt to global standards in road safety and align with the Renewed Hope Agenda,” Mohammed explained.
He further elaborated on the app’s features, which include alerts for speeding, dangerous driving, and vehicle document verification, while NACRIS will focus on crash reporting and data management.
According to him, proper use of these features will significantly reduce road traffic injuries and fatalities.
“In this digital age, the FRSC must evolve with the times. Adapting to global technology trends is essential for improving road safety. NACRIS, in particular, will allow us to collect and manage crash data effectively, ensuring informed decision-making and policy implementation,” Mohammed added.
Chairman of the House Committee on FRSC, Abiodun Adesida, also praised the new technologies, noting that real-time traffic updates and accident alerts will encourage safer driving.
He expressed support for ongoing efforts to amend the FRSC Act to further modernize and enhance the agency’s capabilities.
“The new app offers real-time information on traffic and accident alerts, which is crucial for road safety. We are also working on amending the FRSC Act to better equip the Corps for its evolving role in road safety management,” Adesida remarked.
