Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu, has reaffirmed the country’s commitment to providing universal energy access by 2060, with a near-term goal of generating 30 gigawatts of grid energy by 2030.
This announcement was made on Thursday through a statement shared via the Ministry of Power’s official media platform, highlighting the government’s energy vision.
During the China-Nigeria Economic Cooperation and Trade Conference held in Beijing, Adelabu reiterated the country’s ambitious energy plan, stating, “In Nigeria, we are committed to achieving universal energy access by 2060, with a short-term target under our Vision 30:30:30 to attain 30GW of grid energy supply with a 30 per cent renewable energy mix by 2030, and a long-term goal of universal energy access.”
Adelabu emphasized that Nigeria’s drive toward energy reform presents a significant opportunity for deepening its relationship with China’s investment community.
He highlighted the potential for Chinese investors to play a pivotal role in enhancing the adoption of cleaner, more sustainable energy solutions across Nigeria.
“To achieve this objective,” Adelabu noted, “the Federal Government of Nigeria has implemented a multi-pronged approach designed to tackle issues across the Nigeria Electricity Supply Industry value chain and set the sector on a path to recovery and prosperity.”
The minister laid out several initiatives aimed at achieving these ambitious goals. These include streamlining legislative and policy frameworks, enhancing public-private partnerships, fostering the use of innovative technology, and encouraging strategic collaborations both locally and internationally.
These measures are intended to resolve persistent challenges within the energy sector and ensure a sustainable future for Nigeria’s power supply.
Expressing optimism about future cooperation with China, Adelabu remarked, “I believe this Nigeria-China Economic Forum presents a great opportunity for us to firm up our existing areas of collaboration and explore additional opportunities for shared prosperity.”
