At least 31 people have lost their lives in a devastating flood that recently swept through 21 local government areas in Kano State.
The flood also affected over 280 residents and led to the destruction of 5,280 homes.
According to The PUNCH, the Executive Secretary of the Kano State Emergency Management Agency Isyaku Kubarachi, on Wednesday detailed the extent of the disaster.
“The heavy rainfall that caused this flood was particularly severe, leading to the collapse of several mud houses, which left 135 people injured,” Kubarachi stated.
In addition to the widespread damage to homes, the flood destroyed 2,518 farmlands, spanning 976 hectares.
The most affected areas include Wudil, Gwale, Nassarawa, Dala, Tarauni, Dawakin-Tofa, and Dambatta.
Kubarachi emphasized that the state government, led by Governor Abba Yusuf, had taken proactive steps before the rainy season to protect lives and property.
“We cleared blockages in drains and removed refuse to ensure smooth water flow during the rainy season,” he said.
In response to the disaster, both SEMA and the National Emergency Management Agency have conducted damage assessments and forwarded the necessary data to the government.
“The state government is actively working on providing aid to all 21 affected local government areas, and we hope for a positive outcome soon,” Kubarachi added.
He also noted that while the National Emergency Management Agency has pledged to assist in assessing the affected communities, those displaced by the floods are currently staying with neighbors, as there are no internally displaced persons camps in Kano State.
Meanwhile, some victims have expressed dissatisfaction with the government’s response and are urging both state and federal authorities to provide immediate assistance.
