Gunmen believed to be Boko Haram insurgents attacked Mafa village in the Tarmuwa Local Government Area of Yobe State.
The assailants looted shops and homes before setting them on fire.
The spokesperson for the Yobe State Police Command, DSP Dungus Abdulkarim, confirmed the incident to the News Agency of Nigeria in Damaturu on Monday.
”We are yet to ascertain the number of lives lost in the incident, which occurred at about 4pm on Sunday in the remote village.
”Babagana Goni and Bako Ibrahim, both Mafa residents, reported the incident to the Tarmuwa Divisional Police Station.
”Suspected Boko Haram terrorists armed with rifles and RPGs attacked Mafa Ward on more than 50 motorcycles and set ablaze many shops and houses.
“The terrorists also killed many people, but we are yet to ascertain the actual number of the casualties,” the spokesman said.
The gunmen also distributed flyers featuring Arabic inscriptions.
In a separate incident, at least three students from Faudiya School in Geidam Local Government Area of Yobe State were reported dead following an attack by armed assailants early on Friday.
