Manchester United captain, Harry Maguire, is set to be stripped of the captaincy role as, Erik ten Hag, searches for a new centre-back.
Maguire endured immense scrutiny from the United faithful last season after a poor season in which he underperformed alongside many of the stars in the squad but he attracted more criticism as the skipper and his leadership was called into question by some of his own team-mates.
Amidst growing calls from the Red Army to replace the 29-year-old as skipper, Maguire’s future at the club became a trending topic after rumours suggest that the club has included him in a cash-plus-player deal in an attempt to land Ten Hag’s transfer priority target, Frankie de Jong.
However, fresh reports from local media suggested that the Manchester club are set to keep Maguire but will look to sign a new centre-back provided they sell fringe players like Eric Bailly, Phil Jones or Axel Tuanzebe.
Meanwhile, respected Italian sports journalist, Fabrizio Romona, said that Maguire remains calm over the captaincy situation.
“Erik ten Hag will speak to individual players and there will be a decision on Man United captain in the coming days or weeks,” CaughtOffside quoted Romano as saying.
“At the moment, I understand that Harry Maguire is very calm and not worried about Ten Hag’s decision, which would eventually be part of the start of a new technical project.
“Personally, I believe that Cristiano Ronaldo with his leadership can be an excellent captain but the internal decisions on these topics arise from many evaluations: I am sure that Ten Hag will be able to make the best choice.”
