The Enugu State Government has mandated all churches and mosques across the state to remove outdoor loudspeakers and implement soundproofing measures within their worship centers within the next 90 days.
According to The PUNCH, the directive was issued following a stakeholders’ meeting held on Thursday, aimed at enforcing the Enugu State Anti-Noise Pollution Policy.
The engagement, organized by the Enugu Capital Territory Development Authority, brought together Christian and Muslim leaders, government officials, media practitioners, and other relevant stakeholders.
The Chairman of ECTDA, Uche Anya, emphasized the urgency of addressing noise pollution in the state.
“Over the past year, my office has received more than a thousand petitions from residents across various neighborhoods, all complaining about noise pollution from religious centers and businesses,” Anya revealed. “Noise pollution is the biggest challenge we are currently facing in Enugu, affecting areas from Independence Layout to GRA, Trans-Ekulu, Agbani Road, Abakpa Nike, Ugwuaji, and beyond.”
Anya further stated, “We are giving every church and mosque in Enugu State a three-month ultimatum to remove outdoor loudspeakers and begin installing soundproof (acoustic) systems within their worship centers.”
