Nigeria’s leading commercial bank, Guaranty Trust Bank has firmly denied reports that its website was seized by hackers, calling the claims “entirely false.”
A senior GTBank executive, who craved anonymity due to not being authorized to speak publicly, disclosed this information exclusively to Daily Post.
The executive clarified that the recent issues with the bank’s website, gtbank.com, which became inaccessible on Wednesday night, were not related to any hacking activity.
This disruption occurred just a day after the domain had been renewed for another five years, extending until 2029.
Despite the website’s downtime, GTBank’s mobile applications for both Android and iOS platforms continued to operate without any interruptions.
The incident led to widespread speculation that a fake version of the website might have been set up to phish for customer information.
However, no hacker group has stepped forward to claim responsibility for such an attack.
A cybersecurity expert suggested that the problem could be linked to compromised login credentials rather than an outright domain hijack.
This aligns with the statement from the unnamed GTBank executive, who insisted that the issue was purely a “connectivity problem” and not related to any security breach.
The clarification comes amid swirling reports that the bank’s website had been compromised in a major phishing operation, with customers’ data potentially intercepted.
The senior executive, however, categorically dismissed these allegations, stating, “It’s false. What we are experiencing is a connectivity issue and has nothing to do with the alleged hacking.”
This reassures customers and stakeholders that the bank’s digital infrastructure remains secure, and the current situation is being addressed to restore full online services.
