The Nigeria Immigration Service has initiated a formal investigation following a viral video on social media that appears to show a female traveler tearing a Nigerian Standard Passport at Murtala Mohammed International Airport in Lagos.
The traveler in question has been identified as Mrs. Favour Igiebor, who holds passport number A11990869.
According to a statement by NIS Public Relations Officer Kenneth Udo, the Comptroller General of Immigration has ordered Mrs. Igiebor to be summoned for further investigation.
The NIS statement highlighted that if the incident is confirmed, it could be a violation of Section 10(b) of the Immigration Act 2015 (as amended), with potential penalties under Section 10(h) of the same Act.
Udo emphasized that the Nigeria Immigration Service remains dedicated to enforcing the Immigration Act, ensuring national security, and protecting the integrity of the nation’s legal documents.
The statement reads partly, “If the allegations are substantiated, the statement notes, that her action would constitute a breach of Section 10(b) of the Immigration Act 2015 (as amended), with corresponding penalties outlined under Section 10(h) of the same Act.
“Udo reiterates that the Nigeria Immigration Service remains steadfast in its commitment to upholding the provisions of the Immigration Act in the interest of national security, and to preserve the dignity and integrity of the nation’s legal instruments.”
