In response to the rising incidents of building collapses, the Anambra State government has initiated a new campaign, “Operation Show Your Building Permit,” aimed at identifying and demolishing illegal structures across the state.
The initiative is being spearheaded by the State Physical Planning Board.
According to The PUNCH, the Chairman and Managing Director of the Anambra State Physical Planning Board Chike Maduekwe explained the necessity of this operation during the demolition of unauthorized buildings at Ogbo-Oroma, off Port-Harcourt Road in Onitsha South Local Government Area on Friday.
According to Maduekwe, the initiative is part of a broader effort to prevent further building collapses by ensuring all structures comply with state regulations.
The state government has temporarily halted all ongoing construction projects, instructing developers to present their building permits.
Maduekwe emphasized that many developers have bypassed the legal process, often due to land disputes or lack of proper documentation.
“Some developers have been taking advantage of the state by building without the necessary permits, sometimes on disputed lands or without proper documentation,” Maduekwe said. “Recently, our staff were harassed and chased away by thugs while on an official assignment. The governor has made it clear that such intimidation will no longer be tolerated.”
Maduekwe warned that any construction undertaken without proper approval will be demolished, as the government is determined to enforce building regulations strictly. “Developers must now adhere to the law.
The welfare of the people is the government’s priority, and anyone ignoring the regulations will face the consequences,” he added.
The ASPPB has begun the enforcement process and will extend the operation to various locations across the state. Significant enforcement actions are expected to take place this week, as directed by the governor.
The government has also issued a grace period from August 1 to October 31, during which penalties for non-compliance will not be applied. However, after this period, violators will face arrest, prosecution, and the cost of demolition.
