President Bola Tinubu has firmly defended his decision to remove petrol subsidies upon taking office, emphasizing that his administration is committed to providing good governance for Nigerians.
Speaking on Sunday morning in Abuja during a nationwide broadcast on the #EndBadGovernance protests, Tinubu underscored the importance of his policy changes.
The President reiterated his stance on the subsidy removal, asserting, “These decisions I made were necessary if we must reverse the decades of economic mismanagement that didn’t serve us well. I can assure you that I am focused fully on delivering the governance to the people – good governance for that matter.”
This move, according to Tinubu, is crucial to rectify long-standing economic inefficiencies.
Highlighting the positive outcomes of his administration’s fiscal policies, the President noted that aggregate government revenues have more than doubled, surpassing N9.1 trillion in the first half of 2024 compared to the same period in 2023.
He attributed this significant increase to efforts to block financial leakages, the introduction of automation, and the creative mobilization of funding without imposing additional burdens on the populace.
Tinubu also pointed out the gradual rise in productivity within the non-oil sector, which he described as reaching unprecedented levels.
He emphasized that the current economic environment is ripe with opportunities that are being effectively harnessed to drive growth and development.
In a call for patience, Tinubu urged Nigerians to support the ongoing economic recovery efforts.
“The economy is recovering; Please, don’t shut out its oxygen,” he pleaded, stressing the need for continued cooperation and understanding from the public.
Reflecting on Nigeria’s progress, Tinubu remarked, “Now that we have been enjoying democratic governance for 25 years, do not let the enemies of democracy use you to promote an unconstitutional agenda that will set us back on our democratic journey. Forward ever, backward never!”
He reminded citizens of the importance of safeguarding the nation’s democratic achievements.
The President finally tasked security operatives with maintaining peace, law, and order across the country.
He emphasized adherence to human rights conventions, to which Nigeria is a signatory.
“The safety and security of all Nigerians are paramount,” Tinubu concluded, reinforcing his administration’s commitment to the well-being of the nation.
