The Kaduna State chapter of the Christian Association of Nigeria has expressed deep sorrow over the loss of lives in several states during recent hunger protests that escalated into violence.
The chairman of CAN in Kaduna State, Rev. Ma’aji Caleb, urged Nigerians to exercise restraint and avoid taking the law into their own hands.
He also encouraged Christians in Kaduna to remain steadfast amid the ongoing unrest.
In a statement, Rev. Caleb said, “Our nation came to a standstill as a consequence of the ongoing hunger protest. This experience speaks volumes to us about our growth towards ideal nationhood.”
He further emphasized the position of CAN on the matter, aligning with national leaders, and praised the Christian communities for their peaceful conduct during the protests.
“We sincerely appreciate the Christian communities who we are privileged to lead for the way and manner in which our faithful conducted themselves during the protest that took place,” Rev. Caleb noted.
He highlighted that Christians adhered to the call to be civil and peaceful if they chose to participate in the protests.
However, he lamented the violence that erupted in some states, resulting in the tragic loss of lives, stating, “In some states in the country, the protest became violent with recorded loss of lives. This is regrettable. Our hearts go to the families of all those who were victims of this unfortunate incident and those who lost properties,” he added.
