The Super Falcons of Nigeria have been eliminated from the Paris 2024 Olympics following a 3-1 defeat to Japan on Wednesday.
Japan surged ahead with early goals from Maika Hamano and Mina Tanaka, and sealed their victory with a third goal by Hikaru Kitagawa, despite Jennifer Echegini’s effort that briefly gave Nigeria hope.
Nadeshiko Japan secured the second spot in Group B, finishing two points behind World Champions Spain, who triumphed over Brazil 2-0.
Echegini, who replaced Esther Okoronkwo in the starting lineup, scored Nigeria’s lone goal, which stood out in an otherwise lackluster performance by Randy Waldrum’s side.
Japan opened the scoring in the 21st minute, taking advantage of a counter-attack. Riko Ueki’s precise pass found Maika Hamano, who easily slotted it past Chiamaka Nnadozie.
The former world champions maintained their momentum, and in the 32nd minute, Riko Ueki’s header hit the post, allowing Mina Tanaka to capitalize and double Japan’s lead.
Just four minutes before halftime, Christy Ucheibe set up Echegini, who expertly reduced the deficit.
However, Japan quickly reinstated their two-goal lead through Hikaru Hitagawa’s exquisite free-kick, which left Nnadozie helpless.
Early in the second half, VAR reviewed a shove by Rasheedat Ajibade in the penalty area, but to Nigeria’s relief, no penalty was awarded.
Japan continued to pose a threat, with Kiko Seike nearly adding to the scoreline in the 65th minute, but her header missed the target.
Echegini tried to inspire a comeback with a long-range shot, but Japan’s goalkeeper Ayaka Yamashita was equal to the challenge.
