The Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Senator George Akume has voiced concerns regarding the planned hunger protests set to take place from August 1-10, warning that such demonstrations could be exploited by bandits and insurgents.
According to The PUNCH, Akume made this known in a briefing held at the Radio House in Abuja on Wednesday.
Akume emphasized the potential risks associated with protests, advocating for alternative means of engagement with the government.
“Protests are susceptible to hijacking by bandits, insurgents, and other criminals,” Akume cautioned. “We urge Nigerians to opt for dialogue, and we remain open to such discussions.”
Akume highlighted that the Bola Tinubu-led administration is actively addressing the nation’s challenges and that demonstrations are not a solution to the current issues.
He assured that the government is committed to alleviating economic hardships and delivering on its promises.
“Nigeria is a work in progress, and soon we shall see relief from the ongoing economic difficulties,” he stated. “We appeal to all Nigerians to prioritize peace and progress over protests.”
While acknowledging the right to peaceful protest, Akume called for vigilance and caution.
He urged citizens to avoid actions that might disrupt national peace and to engage in legitimate activities instead.
“Together, we will create a Nigeria where peace and stability are realities, and where economic growth is tangible,” he asserted.
Addressing the economic situation, Akume noted that the administration inherited significant challenges, necessitating bold reforms such as the removal of the fuel subsidy.
He admitted that these measures have led to difficult adjustments but are essential for long-term prosperity.
“Peace and stability are essential for economic growth, and this administration is focused on securing lives, fostering investment, and increasing food production,” he said. “President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is committed to leading Nigeria through these challenging times, with a vision of inclusive prosperity for all.”
Akume concluded by encouraging Nigerians to support the government’s efforts and to collaborate in overcoming the nation’s challenges.
