The Nigerian Bar Association has urged the organizers of the upcoming #EndBadGovernance nationwide protest, scheduled to commence on August 1, to reconsider and potentially cancel the demonstration.
According to The PUNCH, in a statement released on Monday, NBA President Mr. Yakubu Maikyau, called for a united dialogue involving the government, protest organizers, and supporters to address the issues at hand.
Maikyau emphasized that past mass protests in Nigeria have often been co-opted by criminal elements, turning peaceful demonstrations into violent riots.
He expressed concerns that the planned protest might exacerbate existing problems, leading to civil unrest that could be more damaging than the current conditions.
Maikyau said, “I most humbly appeal to Nigerians, particularly those that have decided to embark on the planned street protest to have a rethink and take a second look at what could be the possible outcome of embarking on such exercise to our security, economy, and existence.”
He highlighted that previous protests have been marred by violence and criminal activities, and he fears that the situation could deteriorate further.
Maikyau emphasized the importance of avoiding the chaos and destruction seen in conflict-ridden nations, urging a reconsideration of the protest plan.
In his appeal, Maikyau also suggested establishing regular mechanisms for government-citizen engagement, with clear timelines for addressing specific issues.
He encouraged members of the National and State Assemblies to actively engage with their constituents to address government plans and demands.
Additionally, the NBA Chairman called on the government to explore effective strategies to revitalize the economy and address security challenges, which he believes are major contributors to poverty and hunger.
He said, “We have consistently and in no unclear terms, called the government’s attention to the sufferings of the people of this country and the need for the government to take clear and decisive steps to revamp the economy and get Nigerians out of hunger and poverty, caused largely by incidents of the insecurity across the country.”
He also recommended convening a National Security Summit to involve military, police, intelligence, and other law enforcement officials in reexamining and addressing the nation’s security challenges.
The summit should include traditional institutions, religious leaders, and civil society organizations to ensure comprehensive dialogue and monitoring of the proposed solutions.
