A gold bikini-style costume worn by Hollywood actress Carrie Fisher in the Star Wars franchise has been auctioned for $175,000, £136,000.
Fisher’s character, Princess Leia, wore the iconic outfit while chained to Jabba the Hutt’s throne in the 1983 film Episode VI – Return Of The Jedi.
Leia was captured by the crime boss Jabba after attempting to rescue Han Solo, portrayed by Harrison Ford.
In a memorable scene, Leia strangles the slug-like Jabba with the chain around her neck.
The Star Wars bikini, considered one of the most recognizable costumes in film history, includes a bikini top, bikini plates, hip rings, an armlet, and a bracelet.
Fisher recounted her initial reaction to the garment, saying she thought director George Lucas was “kidding” when he showed her the bikini.
She told NPR in an interview a month before her death in 2016 that she felt “nearly naked, which is not a style choice for me” and that it made her “very nervous.”
During filming, Fisher revealed she had to “sit very straight because I couldn’t have lines on my sides, like little creases. No creases were allowed, so I had to sit very, very rigid straight.”
In the same auction, a miniature Y-Wing starfighter, flown by Gold Leader who assisted Luke Skywalker, Mark Hamill, in destroying the Death Star in 1977’s Star Wars: Episode IV – A New Hope, sold for $1.55 million (£1.21 million) after a bidding war.
Heritage Auctions, the company that conducted the sale, noted that the miniature is one of only two created for the film.
Other notable items included a wand used by Daniel Radcliffe in Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban, which fetched $52,000, and a hammer prop from a Thor film, which sold for $81,000.
Additionally, an outfit worn by Macauley Culkin in the first Home Alone film was sold for $47,500.
