In a coordinated operation, Nigerian Army troops, alongside vigilante operatives, reportedly neutralized over 100 armed bandits near Kundu in Wushishi Local Government Area of Niger State.
The confrontation occurred on Wednesday morning.
Security forces ambushed the criminals as they were crossing Kontagora road, following their customary route toward the Akere area of Kundu.
Monitored closely by military and vigilante units, the bandits were intercepted, leading to significant casualties among the criminals.
According to a local source from Kundu, residents were initially alerted to the bandits’ approach via motorcycles, but it was later discovered that the bandits had abandoned their motorcycles and were advancing on foot, likely due to informants tipping them off.
Wushishi resident Ishaku Musa Kato recounted hearing gunshots even amidst heavy rainfall on Wednesday morning.
“We commend the military and vigilantes for countering them successfully this time around,” Kato stated.
Confirming the incident, Niger State Commissioner for Homeland and Security, Retired General Abdullahi Bello Mohammed, praised the efforts of the military and vigilantes.
“The bandits will surely evacuate their injured and corpses. Nobody can confirm exactly the number of casualties now,” he added.
