Ogun State Governor, Dapo Abiodun, has named the 12.5-kilometre Kemta-Idi Aba-Somorin road in Abeokuta after the Nobel Laureate, Wole Soyinka.
This announcement was made by Abiodun at a state-organized reception celebrating Soyinka’s 90th birthday in Abeokuta on Wednesday.
Abiodun cited Soyinka’s distinguished achievements in academia and literature as the reason for this honor, noting that Soyinka has brought immense pride to Ogun State, Nigeria, and the entire black race.
In his speech, Abiodun emphasized Soyinka’s contributions beyond literature, highlighting his role in showcasing African culture globally.
He remarked, “Prof. Wole Soyinka is a towering figure in literature and a Nobel Laureate whose works have echoed across the world. A shining star of our great nation, his life and work are great testaments as a great genius. His intellectual prowess and his unwavering dedication to the advancement of humanity are without question.
“As a colossus of our era, he continues to exemplify the spirit of resilience through his unwavering commitment to truth and justice. Throughout his life, he has continued to challenge oppression, using himself as a mighty sword against injustice,” Abiodun added.
The governor also reflected on Soyinka reaching the age of 90, attributing it to divine grace.
He expressed gratitude to President Bola Tinubu for renaming the National Arts Theatre in Lagos in Soyinka’s honor, deeming it a well-deserved tribute.
Abiodun praised Soyinka’s literary contributions, stating, “His writings are powerful weapons for social change and enlightenment, rich in symbolism and depth that have captivated audiences globally and transcended cultural boundaries.
“His career spans academia, literature, and activism, exemplifying a profound commitment to creating a just and equitable world,” the governor continued.
Abiodun recounted Soyinka’s imprisonment during the Nigerian civil war on charges of collaborating with the Biafran secessionists, during which he spent 22 months in detention. Despite this, Soyinka’s resolve for a just society remained steadfast.
During the event, former Secretary of the Commonwealth Emeka Anyaoku supervised the cutting of Soyinka’s birthday cake and lauded him as a champion of democracy and promoter of human dignity.
The celebration saw the attendance of notable figures, including former Ogun State Governor Olusegun Osoba and former Minister of Transportation Rotimi Amaechi.
