The Anambra State Chapter of the Judiciary Staff Union of Nigeria, on Monday initiated an indefinite strike due to the state government’s refusal to implement the Consolidated Judiciary Salary Structure
A correspondent of the News Agency of Nigeria who visited the High Courts at Ekwueme Square, Chief Magistrate’s Courts, and Customary Courts in Amawbia, Awka, observed a complete halt in court proceedings.
The court premises were deserted, with no magistrates, judges, or staff present—only security personnel were on duty. Lawyers and litigants who arrived were turned away as the gates were locked.
The State Chairman of JUSUN, Mr Henry Ezeoke, told NAN that the strike aimed to protest the state’s non-compliance with agreements made in 2011 and 2015.
“The action was a result of the state government’s refusal to pay CONJUS as agreed in 2011 and 2015 respectively.
“We have explored all possible avenues but the state government has refused to comply with the agreement on implementation of CONJUS.
“The union earlier issued a 21-day ultimatum to the state government but it was ignored. We believe that downing tools is the only language the government understands.
“Therefore, the strike will last indefinitely, until the government meets the conditions and pending further directives by the union,” Ezeoke stated.
