The Senate on Wednesday suspended its sitting to honor the late member of the House of Representatives, Olajide Akinremi, known as Jagaban, who passed away earlier that morning after a brief illness.
Akinremi represented the Ibadan North Federal Constituency in Oyo State until his death.
According to the tradition, the Senate convened briefly before suspending its session and adjourning until Thursday, July 11, 2024.
Senate President Godswill Akpabio announced Akinremi’s passing and expressed condolences to his family, saying, “With sadness in my heart, I would like to announce the demise of Honourable Olajide Akinremi. His death occurred at the early hours of today after a very brief illness. On behalf of the Senate, we condole with the members of the family, the Speaker of the House, and the members of the House of Representatives.”
Senate Leader Opeyemi Bamidele, APC, Ekiti Central, proposed suspending the day’s legislative activities in honor of the late lawmaker, stating, “In line with our existing traditions, I feel very sad to move that the Senate does suspend its legislative activities for today and all activities on the order paper be stepped down to another legislative day.” Minority Leader Abba Moro (PDP, Benue South) seconded the motion.
Following the motion, the Senate observed a minute of silence for Akinremi and subsequently adjourned.
