The Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, has ordered a renewed investigation into the circumstances surrounding the death of Erasmus Emhenya at the Nyanya Divisional Headquarters in the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja.
Erasmus, who was detained by operatives of the FCT police command following an incident in Nyanya, passed away on April 10, 2023, while in custody.
The deceased’s mother, a food seller in Abuja, alleged during an interview on Human Rights Radio and Television’s program, Brekete Family, that her son was tortured to death by the police while in custody.
She claimed that despite her efforts to see him, she was denied access by officers at the station.
According to her account, she learned of her son’s death from another detainee who alleged he died from police torture.
The video clip of this interview has circulated on social media, drawing attention from various stakeholders who have called for a thorough investigation. In response to the outcry, the FCT Police Command initially refuted the allegations, citing an autopsy report that reportedly showed no signs of torture.
However, in a statement released by the Force Spokesperson, ACP Muyiwa Adejobi, on Tuesday night, the Inspector General of Police expressed deep concern over the incident.
He directed the Deputy Inspector General of the Force Criminal Investigation Department to commence a fresh, comprehensive, and transparent investigation into the matter promptly. The IG emphasized the need for justice to prevail in this case.
Adejobi stated, “The IG has been informed about the controversy surrounding the death of Erasmus Emhenya, who reportedly died in police custody at the Nyanya Divisional Police Headquarters, FCT, on April 10, 2023. He has ordered a new investigation to uncover the cause of death and ensure justice prevails.”
The directive underscores the seriousness with which the police leadership is addressing the matter, aiming to provide clarity and accountability in the investigation.
