Argentina head coach, Lionel Scaloni, remains resolute that Lionel Messi is ready for action in Copa America semi-final clash against Canada, despite concerns over his recent injury.
The Argentina captain had suffered a hamstring issue during the group stage against Chile, sidelining him for the subsequent match against Peru.
However, Messi made a comeback in the quarter-finals against Ecuador, where he notably missed a penalty but saw his team through with Emiliano Martinez’s heroics in goal.
Messi admitted to some apprehension before returning to the pitch against Ecuador, but Scaloni has dismissed any doubts about his fitness.
“99% of the time, Messi is fit to play,” Scaloni affirmed. “I’ve never encountered a situation where he wasn’t ready to go. Whenever he steps onto the field, he’s prepared to play. For the match against Canada, there’s no doubt he’s fit.”
Scaloni emphasized the straightforwardness of his decision-making regarding Messi’s involvement, stating, “It’s a clear decision for me. If he’s fit, he starts; if not, he comes on for the last 30 minutes. It’s that simple.”
Reflecting on Argentina’s previous encounter with Canada, which they won 2-0, Scaloni acknowledged the challenge posed by Canada’s physicality and tactical approach under coach Jesse Marsch.
“Canada has physically robust players who are technically adept, and their coach encourages an aggressive style of play,” Scaloni analyzed. “They’ve been tough opponents for all teams. We’ll aim to control the game with our strengths.”
Scaloni anticipated adjustments from both sides in this crucial match, noting, “Every coach learns from past encounters and prepares to exploit weaknesses. We’ll focus on dominating possession and disrupting their game plan.”
