Barcelona’s president, Joan Laporta, asserted that the club’s financial health is robust enough to facilitate the acquisition of Nico Williams from Athletic Club, despite contrary reports.
Williams had an impressive 2023/24 season at the club level and has continued to excel in Spain’s outstanding Euro 2024 campaign, playing a crucial role in their advance to the semi-finals.
The Catalan press has been abuzz with speculation about Williams potentially joining Barcelona this summer. Even his Spain teammate, Lamine Yamal, has commented on the prospect of playing alongside Williams in La Liga.
Despite Barcelona’s well-documented financial troubles over the past several years, it has been suggested that the club would need to sell a key player to afford a significant new signing this summer.
Nevertheless, Laporta has informed Catalunya Radio that Barcelona is capable of meeting Williams’ €50m release clause if they decide to pursue the transfer.
When questioned about the availability of funds to sign the skilled winger, Laporta stated, “As of today, yes. It is the result of a work that has been done these years to get to this point, we could face a signing of this level.
“It has been three very intense years, with many things to do, but we have worked very well and we are happy with the work because the club’s finances are recovering and we will soon have good news in this regard.
“We are working to confirm the club’s economic recovery and there are a series of operations that we have worked on and that we will soon be able to announce. It is very comforting to be able to finish this process that has taken us three years and I hope that we return to normality.”
Williams isn’t the sole Spain international on Barcelona’s list. Reports revealed that the club is negotiating with RB Leipzig for a potential €60m deal for Dani Olmo.
