The Delta Police Command has confirmed the arrest and detention of the officers involved in the shooting of Miss Rukevwe Hilda, a Delta State University, Abraka undergraduate.
The incident occurred in Oria-Abraka, located in Delta State’s Ethiope East Area.
Miss Hilda, a final-year student in the Department of Physiology, was scheduled to complete her studies on Monday.
The incident occurred while Miss Hilda was in a vehicle driven by her boyfriend, Precious.
Precious recounted that as he was making a U-turn, he heard someone hitting his vehicle from behind.
Upon exiting his vehicle, he saw that the individuals were policemen. Displeased with their approach, he returned to his car and drove off.
Shortly afterward, he heard a gunshot, which pierced his car and struck his girlfriend, who was seated in the passenger seat.
Miss Hilda was initially transferred to Dunflux Hospital in Abraka but was later moved to the Delta State University Teaching Hospital in Oghara for treatment.
National Coordinator of the Initiative for Social Rights Concerns and Advancements, Comrade Derrick Oritsematosan Agberen, disclosed this in a statement.
Agberen detailed the events, stating, “As of late last night, after Miss Rukevwe Hilda John was stabilized, she was referred from Dunflux Hospital, Abraka to Lille Hospital Warri, where she was rejected, as her conditions require specialized knowledge, as the wounds from the bullets penetrated through her intestine, down through her kidney, which requires proper examinations before the surgical procedures. She was later received at the Delta State University Teaching Hospital (DELSUTH) at around 2:30am Sunday, where she’s being attended to and prepared for a surgical session.”
Highlighting her academic status, Agberen added, “Interestingly, Miss Rukevwe Hilda John is a final year student of the Delta State University, Abraka, from the Department of Physiology, where she’s supposed to sign-out tomorrow (Monday).”
The doctor in charge of DELSUTH’s emergency unit, Dr. Paul Onuigbo, assured that every effort would be made to ensure a successful treatment process.
Director of Health at Delta State University, Abraka, Dr. Simeon Onakugwortor, has been present since the incident to ensure Miss Hilda receives the best care.
Agberen urged the Delta State Police Command to thoroughly investigate the incident and hold the responsible officers accountable.
